John Sperry, a self-taught, Southern folk artist was born in 1956. His works are whimsical, colorful, primitive images of the rural South, musicians, animals, soda bottles, flowers, and fantasy painted with acrylics on wood or old roofing tin.

After John first encountered folk art, he was inspired by the great feeling conveyed by this fun, free-form style. Shortly after his first encounter with folk art, John began painting for the first time in his life since childhood. His paintings attracted an audience almost immediately. Three months after he started painting, he quit his corporate job because he knew he had to paint.

John and his wife, Danette (a wood artist and carpenter) live in an early 20th-century house in northeast Georgia where they create and appreciate a simpler way of life.
