Jim and Vickie Smith are long-time residents of Sautee Nacoochee, Georgia, and for the past several years they have been crafting fully-functional birdhouses of the folk art style. They use reclaimed wood and tin from torn-down buildings in the surrounding counties. The birdhouses are decorated with old tools, architectural items, yard sale finds and all sorts of materials that served a different purpose in a past life.

The couple showcases approximately 25 arts and crafts festivals and garden shows throughout the Southeast. When the two crafters are not busy in the shop or at one of the many festivals, they are on the roads of the Northeast Georgia mountains delivering mail. They both work as letter carriers for the United States Postal Service. Jim is based in Sautee Nacoochee and Vickie works out of Dahlonega.

Between the two of them, they have five children and four grandchildren. The two youngest children are currently attending college and the majority of the profits from the sale of the birdhouses help to pay for their college education. Jim and Vickie work very hard and are always busy, but they say they enjoy the birdhouse business and that they truly enjoy getting to know the many wonderful people they have had the opportunity to meet along the way.
